Health and Nutrition

Overview

Prolonged civil wars coupled with natural disasters have severely weakened the health systems in countries like Somalia. More than 3 million Somalis are in desperate need of health aid, as there are fewer than one health facility per 10,000 people. This scarcity contributes to a staggering infant and child mortality rate, with 1 out of 7 children dying before their fifth birthday (137 deaths per 1,000 live births). Leading causes of these deaths include pneumonia (24%), diarrhea (19%), measles (12%), and neonatal disorders (17%).

ERDO’s Commitment to Health and Nutrition

The Environmental & Rural Development Organization (ERDO) is dedicated to addressing these critical health challenges through comprehensive health and nutrition programs. Our initiatives aim to improve access to healthcare, enhance nutritional status, and promote overall well-being in vulnerable communities. Here’s how we are making a difference:

  • Healthcare Facilities

    • Clinic Construction and Rehabilitation: ERDO constructs and rehabilitates health clinics in underserved areas, providing essential medical services to communities that previously had none.
    • Mobile Health Units: In remote regions, our mobile health units bring medical care directly to the people, ensuring that even the most isolated individuals receive the attention they need.
  • Healthcare Equipment and Supplies

    • Medical Equipment: We supply public hospitals and healthcare facilities with vital medical equipment and healthcare management solutions. This enhances the capacity of local healthcare providers to deliver quality care.
    • Medication and Supplies: ERDO ensures that clinics and hospitals are stocked with essential medications and medical supplies, reducing the prevalence of treatable diseases and conditions.
  • Healthcare Training and Support

    • Training Programs: We conduct training programs for local healthcare workers, improving their skills and knowledge to better serve their communities.
    • Community Health Workers: ERDO trains community health workers who provide basic healthcare services, health education, and referrals to more extensive medical care.
  • Nutrition Education

    • Awareness Campaigns: We run nutrition awareness campaigns to educate communities about the importance of a balanced diet, breastfeeding, and proper infant and young child feeding practices.
    • Workshops and Seminars: Our workshops and seminars equip families with the knowledge to make healthier food choices and improve their overall nutritional status.
  • Supplementary Feeding Programs

    • Malnutrition Treatment: ERDO implements supplementary feeding programs for malnourished children and pregnant or lactating women, providing nutrient-rich food and supplements to improve health outcomes.
    • School Feeding Programs: We support school feeding programs that ensure children receive at least one nutritious meal per day, which enhances their ability to learn and grow.
  • Agriculture and Food Security

    • Sustainable Agriculture: We promote sustainable agricultural practices that increase food production and improve food security. This includes training in modern farming techniques, distribution of quality seeds, and support for small-scale farmers.
    • Community Gardens: ERDO helps communities establish and maintain gardens that provide fresh, nutritious produce, improving dietary diversity and food availability.
  • ERDO

ERDO remains steadfast in our commitment to improving health and nutrition in vulnerable communities. By addressing both immediate healthcare needs and long-term nutritional challenges, we are working towards a healthier, more resilient future for all.
