Overview

Livelihoods and food security are fundamental to the well-being and prosperity of any community. In Somalia, agriculture plays a critical role as the main source of employment, foreign exchange earnings, and food. However, the sector faces numerous challenges, including recurring droughts, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to modern agricultural inputs and markets. At the Environmental & Rural Development Organization (ERDO), we are committed to addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable agricultural practices to improve livelihoods and food security in Somalia.

Erdp's Initiatives for Livelihoods & Food Security:

  • Access to Inputs and Equipment: We facilitate access to high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and modern farming equipment. This helps smallholder farmers increase their productivity and improve crop yields.
  • Training and Capacity Building: ERDO offers training programs on modern farming techniques, pest management, and sustainable agricultural practices. This empowers farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to enhance their productivity and resilience.
  • Climate-Smart Practices: We promote climate-smart agricultural practices that help farmers adapt to changing climate conditions and reduce their environmental impact. This includes water conservation techniques, soil health improvement, and integrated pest management.
  • Diversification: Encouraging crop and livestock diversification helps farmers reduce risks associated with climate variability and market fluctuations. This ensures a more stable and secure source of income and food.
  • Agro-Produce Markets: ERDO works to establish and strengthen agro-produce markets that connect smallholder farmers with input manufacturers and suppliers. This ensures farmers have access to necessary resources and can sell their products at fair prices.
  • Value Chain Development: We support the development of value chains for key agricultural products, helping farmers add value to their produce and access higher-value markets.
